While living in India, I spent a lot of time in Sri Lanka and quickly developed a deep connection to the island, its people, landscapes, and craftsmanship. There's a rich, living tradition of jewelry-making there that’s both meticulous and deeply rooted in history.
Sri Lanka, often called the “Island of Gems,” has been a global source of precious stones for centuries. Its sapphires, rubies, and moonstones have long been sought after—not only for their beauty, but for the legacy and skill behind their extraction and cutting.
When I started Sun Rae, I knew I wanted to build something that reflected that same respect for craft, history, and collaboration. I was fortunate to find partners in Sri Lanka who shared that vision and helped bring it to life.
Knowing where my materials come from is a fundamental part of the process. We spent time visiting local mines, speaking with gem traders, and understanding how stones are sourced and cut. Ethical sourcing isn’t a trend—it’s a responsibility. I want each piece to reflect not only high design, but also transparency and integrity.
I chose to work with gold and sapphires because of their enduring value and the refined craftsmanship they represent. Sri Lankan sapphires, in particular, are known for their exceptional quality, clarity, and color. Every piece in this collection tells a story, not just of design, but of place, people, and process.
